Safe Heavy Metal Detox: What I Use, Avoid, and Recommend for Families

In Part 1 of this series, we explored where heavy metals are hiding in our lives—our food, water, cookware, and even the air. Now let’s talk about what to do once you know you’ve been exposed.

Detoxing doesn’t have to be overwhelming, but it does need to be done with intention and care. I’ve personally tested different approaches and products over the years, especially because I’m detoxing not just for myself—but for my children too.

Why Detoxing Matters

Heavy metals don’t leave the body easily. They accumulate over time and can stay lodged in tissue and organs—especially the brain, liver, and bones. The longer they remain, the more they disrupt cellular function and contribute to inflammation, fatigue, brain fog, immune dysfunction, and more.

This is why I make detoxing a regular part of our routine. Twice a year, we do a gentle month-long detox as a family. Over time, I’ve seen improvements in energy, clarity, skin health, and overall wellness.

Proceed with Caution: Herxing is Real

Before starting any detox, it’s important to understand the Herxheimer reaction, or "herxing." This is when detoxing causes a temporary increase in symptoms—like headaches, fatigue, or skin breakouts—because the body is releasing toxins faster than it can eliminate them.

If this happens, slow down. Increase hydration, support the liver, and take binders (like activated charcoal) to help catch and carry toxins out of the body.

Detox Products I Avoid

Not all detox products are safe—some can introduce even more toxins into your system. I’ve personally used:

  • TRS (synthetic zeolite spray)

  • PBS spray (naturally mined zeolite)

While I was initially attracted to a PBX spray because it was cheaper than TRS, my past experience with TRS was neutral—I couldn’t tell if it was effective, despite having no issues using it. Both products use zeolite to trap heavy metals and other toxins. Naturally mined zeolite (PBS) differs from synthetic-based (TRS).

I had no major reactions to TRS, but I also didn’t notice clear improvements. PBS, on the other hand, gave me headaches and digestive upset. PBS contains sodium aluminum silicate, while TRS converts aluminum to aluminum, which remains an inherent part of the aluminum by-product. Both contain forms of aluminum, even though they’re marketed as safe.

My takeaway? If I’m detoxing from heavy metals, I don’t want to introduce more in the process. For this reason, I now avoid products that contain zeolite or aluminum.

Herbs, Binders & Supplements I Trust

Here’s what I’ve come to rely on after years of trial and error:

🌿 Cilantro

Powerful natural chelator for mercury and lead. I use it fresh in meals and also in tincture form.

🟢 Chlorella

Algae that binds to metals and helps eliminate them. It works well alongside cilantro.

🌀 Spirulina

Supports detox pathways and reduces oxidative stress.

🖤 Activated Charcoal

Binds to toxins in the digestive tract and prevents reabsorption. Great during herxing.

🌼 Milk Thistle

Supports liver detox function, especially when doing any deeper cleanse.

Expert Protocols:

  • Dr. Klinghardt’s Detox Protocol: He recommends a combination of cilantro, chlorella, and zeolite, along with therapies like infrared sauna and lymphatic drainage massage.

  • Dr. Mercola’s Detox Tips: Focus on a low-toxin diet, minimize processed foods, use binders like activated charcoal, and support the liver with supplements like milk thistle.

BIORAY: My Family’s Favorite Detox Option

After trying many brands, BIORAY is the one we keep coming back to. Their herbal tinctures are made from organic, wildcrafted ingredients, and the formulations are gentle enough for kids.

What I love:

  • Made with clean, non-GMO ingredients

  • Alcohol content is minimal and gluten-free

  • My kids love the taste (yes, really!)

We typically use BIORAY:

  • A week before school starts (for 4-6 weeks)

  • Around the holidays

  • Before spring break

I suggest easing into the kits by introducing one product at a time. Now that we’re used to them, we take the full detox protocol at once.
